Brother Egil
At the same time that Alessa and Miranda were hunting down Captain Lydon, Cassander was looking up the local healing mages, He ended up at the White Hand Sanatorium in Drac’s End. There, he met Doctor Valerian who, along with Grosco, a surgeon, and Eugenus, an apothecary, ran the hospital. Zyad and Talariel, in the meanwhile, went to the Bladesmark Guild, a place for bodyguards and sellswords. The guild offered a place for job listings, protection from the local City Watch and help. The two as well as Miranda become card-carrying members.
When we finally met up at the Scholar’s Guild again, there was a young priest from the Temple of Knowledge waiting to met us. His name was Brother Egil. He was hoping to hire us to look into the disappearance of his friend, Brother Lucius. The two had grown up together in Freeport, with Egil joining the priesthood and Lucius becoming a librarian.
About six years ago, something changed in Brother Lucius. Lucius started to research something in the Temple library – something that bordered on the heretical and got him expelled from the temple. He disappeared right after that.
When Lucius reappeared, he claimed to have no memory of his research. He returned to his job at the Temple Library with much pleading. Recently, Lucius had become agitated, trying to reconstruct his time that he was missing. Then he disappeared again. Father Milos, Brother Egil’s superior, was unconcerned – the man was unreliable and had disappeared before.
After a light dinner at the Indecipherable Scroll, we started our inquiry by visiting Brother Lucius’ home. It was a modest bungalow in the East End – two rooms and a basement. Brother Egil unlocked the front door and showed us into the front room. It was filled with books and notes. Alessa looked into the back room – a kitchen with a small supply of food. The trap door to the basement was lifted revealing a sparsely filled chamber with new book shelves built into the alcoves. In the front room, Cassander turned up a To Do List and a daily journal. In the meantime, Brother Egil ran back and forth, claiming books that should never have left the Temple library.
It was now late at night so we locked up the bungalow and headed back. On the way back, we were jumped by six ruffians – they were broke and demanded our purses. We drop several of them and sent the others running. After delivering Brother Egil to the temple, we called it for the night.
