Captain Scarbelly
Settling in for the evening, Cassander begins to read Lucius’ journal. It did not cover the missing time in Lucius’s life but gave us an idea of Lucius in the time before his disappearance. The last entry – about a week ago – mentioned that Lucius felt that he was being watched.
As agreed, we met up a lunch the following day. Zayd and Talariel had gone to the East End and visited a pawn shop to sell the winnings of last night’s brawl. Argent Pawn and Trade offered 20% of the new price for the weapons and armor the two brought in. Talariel turned around and bought some heavy leather armor.
After lunch, Miranda and Cassander headed to the Docks to look for Captain Scarbelly. His ship was in port, tied to the end of a long pier. The crew was almost all orcs. When hailed, the first mate of the Bloody Vengeance was not helpful. He suggested that they might find the captain in one of the dockside taverns – he comes ashore now and then for his mug of rum.
Alessa ended up at the Temple of Knowledge. She had a few ideas that needed Brother Egil’s thoughts. Brother Egil was unable to show her where Lucius worked – he was a scribe and wrote where he could. As for what condition Lucius was in when he re-appeared, he was heavily tanned and fit – he had been working out in the sun daily, it seemed.
Later that evening, we returned to the Docks. Miranda spotted a large orc dressed in finery leaving the Bloody Vengeance and strolling to the Broken Mug. When we entered the tavern, we found Captain Scarbelly sitting at a small table.
Miranda and Zayd approached the table and introduced themselves. When asked if the captain would like anything to drink, Captain Scarbelly turned and ordered the Longboat of Whiskey, a 15 sp assortment of expensive whiskey. With the captain working his way through his whiskey, Miranda and Zayd began to question the captain about Lucius.
Lucius appeared about six years ago, according to Captain Scarbelly’s recollection. Lucius paid good money to accompany the pirates on their journeys. He traveled with the ship for a while – keeping a careful journal of his travels and writing in it every day. Lucius left the Blood Vengeance in the east, boarding the Heavenly Firefall and sailing away with the dragonmen.
Captain Scarbelly hadn’t seen him again until four days ago when he showed up and wanted to know where he had been and what he had been doing. The captain found it strange. Then two days ago, Lucius disappeared again. Leaving Captain Scarbelly with his whiskey, we decided to call it a night.
The next day, following up on some thoughts, Cassander requested a appointment with Father Milos. Milos was Lucius’s superior. Cassander found Milos, a slight man with reading glasses pushed up on his head, to be unhelpful,. He did mention that Lucius was able to return to work at the library – he brought valuable books, scrolls and maps from across the world. Lucius’s travel logs were also in the library collection. Visitors would be able to examine the books – in a year or two once they have been checked for heresy and lies.
Cassander attempted to make an appeal to High Priest Thurron but kept being referred back to Father Milos. We then sat down at our usual lunch spot and made plans. First, we needed to talk to Brother Egil about the books that Lucius brought in. Second, we needed to talk to Brother Lucius’s neighbors. Thirdly, following up, we wanted to talk to the local grocers and nearby booksellers. Finally, we thought it might be good if we checked if there are any Eastern dragonmen in the harbor.
