The March of the Augmented Lizard-folk
Walking away from the smoking remains of the living black tar pool, we headed for the passage way from the smaller plaza towards the main plaza. But the sounds of something coming made us step back. A group of serpent folk and lizard folk, all with armor or weapons grafted on or replacing parts of their bodies, were heading in our direction.
We stopped in the archway of the passage connecting the two plazas and unleashed our spells and arrows on them. When the last of them collapsed, we proceeded to the main plaza. Two buildings drew our attention – to one side, a temple reached to the sky; on the other side, the bulk of a civic building reached across the plaza. In the center lay the ruins of an immense statue of a serpent god, it’s head wreathed in snakes. The toppled statue was in honor of Yig, the leading serpent folk god.
Devon sent his invisible quasit through one of the double doors of the temple. It reported that a large number of poisonous snakes were lying in wait in the grass before the temple. Three Rivers charmed the snaked and convinced them to give us passage.
Passing though the huge, twenty foot tall doors, we found ourselves in the nave of a large temple. Before we had time to look around more carefully, another group of augmented serpent and lizard folk attack – including two large brutish lizard folk. We defeated them and then looked closer. The temple was covered in depictions of Yig and they had all been defaced.
Behind the altar, we found a stairway leading down. As we were about to descend, a hot glowing light lit up the stairway. The fire elemental moved up the stairs, sending out flames to hurt us. Tessa had to fall back on her chromatic orbs (ice) since most of her spells were fire based.
Leaving the dying cinders of the fire elemental behind, we walked down the stairs and opened the double doors at the bottom. Three Rivers forced the doors open. Behind the doors was an artificers’ lab with tools, parts and machines for grafting things onto flesh. Several augmented lizard folk were busy packing things into boxes while a serpent folk wizard supervised.
Seeing us, the serpent folk wizard shrieked and ordered his helpers to attack. We killed the wizard and destroyed his lizard folk helpers. Now we could make sense of his lab. Tessa took possession of his spell books. Talos took the wizard’s journals to decipher them. He noted that the wizard had been planning to explore the location of something called the ‘Inverted Tower’ – the journal showed the places the wizard had marked off. There were two locations still unexplored. Having burned a lot of our spells we decided that this lab was a good place to rest and recuperate.
