The Last Stand of the Slavers
The next morning, under a mostly cloudy skies, we set out again, headed north to the rumored location of the Inverted Tower. We had a bit of a problem with raptors stalking us but we were able to kill most of them and scatter the rest.
Our journey took us out of the undergrowth and trees of the jungle to the grasslands and scattered trees of the savannah. Three Rivers called our attention to several trap spiders lying in wait. Tessa cast Burning Sphere and let the flames of the sphere burn out their lairs.
That evening, we made camp and lay down to rest. The night was uneventful other than the distant trilling of a flock of axebeaks. In the morning, we continued our journey. Around mid morning, we came across the axebeaks. They were being hunted by a group of lizard folk. When they had killed several of the axebeaks and ran off the rest, we made ourselves known to them. They were very friendly and invited us to join them at their meal. During the meal, the lizard folk told that their village faced a new and dangerous foe; slavers had recently washed up on a beach near the village and begun taking slaves.
Before heading on to the lizard folk village, Tessa gathered two axebeak eggs. Then we traveled on. Upon arriving at the village, we found most of the lizard folk gathering up their belongings and preparing to move out. We were taken to see their chief. He told us that the slavers had attacked the village again and that there were fiendish beings among them. We assured them that we would try to stop the slavers.
The next morning, we headed down to the beaches. It was an all day journey. Settling down on a hill top overlooking their beach head, we studied their layout. Out in the bay, half of the slaver’s gallery was still above water. On the beach itself, the slavers had secured their slaves by chaining them to posts driven into the ground. Tents had been set up for the slavers while a bit further, there was a ring of corpses surrounding an ugly underwater-type of idol. Three bony devils were stalking around, watching the slaves.
Tessa cast Water Breathing on our party. We headed out to the wreck by walking underwater. The plan was to create a distraction, split the slavers’ forces and deny them the resources of the wreck. Once we had arrived at the wreck, we climbed on to the deck and looked around. There were bodies of rowers, still chained to their oars everywhere. While much of the wreck had been stripped, there was still lots of decorations of a demonic theme. Devon used his decanter to create oils and poured it over the deck of the ship. Tessa cast Burning Sphere to ignite the oil and then plunged into the water.
On shore, the slavers reacted in a panic, gathering most of their men into a long boat and sending them to salvage the burning wreck. We returned to the shore, walking across the bottom of the sea. Talos summoned his shark and when the longboat arrived at the burning wreck, had his shark destroy it.
A red-robed wizard had been standing outside of the slavers’ tents, ordering the salvage efforts. Standing by him was another mage and a buff looking sailor as well as most of the slavers left on shore. Tessa threw two Fireballs on top of him and his men to soften them up a bit. When the smoke had cleared, only the red-robed wizard, the mage and the sailor were standing.
The three bone devils ran from the chained slaves to be met by Three Rivers. Marissa engaged the red-robed wizard while Devon fought with the mage and then the maw-demon that had popped from his corpse.
We won. It had taken all of Tessa’s spells and a good deal of effort on everyone’s part but we killed the red-robed wizard and his slavers. Now, we began to break the slaves from their chains.
