Offal Pits and Barrows
After a few days resting in the lizard folk village, we decided to continue our journey to the Inverted Tower. Three Rivers and Talos had spent a lot of time, treating the former slaves for their addiction to the dulling poisons that the slavers had used. Tessa and Devon had used the time to talk to the local hunters and gatherers to learn about the area and its conditions. They learned that the local lizard folk don’t go close to the Inverted Tower – naga and their entourages often gather there. While the naga go inside, the entourage patrol the outside. This is all about two days travel up into the mountains.
Early in the morning, we finally set out. Our trip took us past the hills and grasslands up into the mountains. Around the mid day, we came across a offal pit, littered with bones, bloody skins and debris. Large lizard folk tracks ran off into the distance.
Following the tracks, we ended up at a small compound outside of a cavern. Finding a hidden spot, we settled down and watched the large lizard folk in the camp. A hunting party entered the compound and their leader called out to the cavern. To our wonderment, a medium sized lizard folk emerged from the cavern, took the game from the hunting party and removed it’s brain. Then the medium sized lizard folk ate the brain and returned to the cavern. Devon noted that the shadow of the medium sized lizard folk did not match the medium sized lizard folk.
We had Devon send in his quasit to scout the cavern. The quasit found a human making a meal from the rest of the game. He was surrounded by stuffed heads on shelves. Devon had the quasit emerge from his invisibility and announce ourselves. The human agreed and invited us to join him inside the cavern – he would clear the way with the large lizard folk outside.
Once in the cavern, he told us that he too was trying to get off the island. The key seems to lie with the naga and their control over the plateau in the center of the island. To gain access, he wishes us to bring us a live naga as a prisoner. By eating the brains, the wizard is able to learn all that the person once knew. We hastily agreed and settled down for a nervous night.
In the morning, we quickly left the human and his large lizard folk and headed deeper into the mountains. Devon had the quasit follow us, watching if anyone or anything was following us. After a day’s traveling, we made camp and rested for the night.
We woke the next morning with the faint smell of something rotting. We turned into the wind and spotted several zombified lizard folk coming toward the camp. It was the work of a few minutes to destroy them. Packing up, we continued our journey. The trail ran up along a valley. A few us spotted the valley floor was filled with barrows.
Talos was for exploring the barrows. We turned from the trail and headed down into the valley. The barrows were not longer sealed so Tessa cast Light and we entered. In the near darkness, we discovered that barrows were filled with red glowing eyes. Wights rose up to attack us. Three Rivers bought us a little time by turning some of them. Spells and sharp weapons finished the rest of them. Then we hunted down and destroyed the turned wights.
With darkness falling, Tessa cast Alarm on the entrance and we made camp in the barrow.
