The Inverted Tower
When we arrived at the valley where the Inverted Tower stood, we were annoyed to find that a naga had already set up camp in front of it. Devon’s quasit counted about a dozen lizard folk milling around the camp. In three larger tents, there were signs that naga was being accompanied by two large lizard folk – but they must have already entered the Inverted Tower.
We decided to not leave any one outside alive so we killed the naga’s forces quickly. Then we entered the Inverted Tower. The Inverted Tower was a series of blocks, each rotated somewhat from the lower block, each somewhat larger than the block it was resting on. There was no door – we walked though a veil in an archway to enter inside.
Inside, we found a large room with stairs leading up. The room had been thoroughly looted and the reliefs of Yig defaced. From somewhere above us, there was a loud thudding – like metal hammers hitting a stone wall.
Moving quickly up the stairs, on the third floor, we found the two large lizard folk wielding hammers and pounding on a stone door. They were being watched by a single naga. The lizard folk’s flesh were riddled with sores and wounds as they worked their hammers.
When they saw us, they shouted and came after us. The naga cast a Lightning Bolt that almost killed Tessa and Three Rivers. But we were better and the fight was soon over. While the others looked over the bodies, Tessa studied the door. She found that it had been warded against entry by lizard folk, serpent folk and naga. Reaching out a hand, she was easily able to open the door.
The sealed room smelled of old reptiles. It had not been looted nor had the reliefs of Yig been defaced. Stairs showed us the way up. Tessa was excited to find one of the rooms contained an arcane library. Before we could continue further up, the sound of bones clacking caught our attention. Skeletal serpent folk were descending from the upper floor followed by lizard folk mummy.
Three Rivers grabbed his divine symbol and turned undead. Most of the skeletal lizard folk collapsed. Tessa threw an empowered Flame Orb at the mummy – and her surprise, it consumed the mummy, leaving only ashes. The few remaining skeletal lizard folk were soon destroyed.
Searching their remains, we turned up an amulet that serves as a magical key. We went upstairs and found a doorway that was magically locked. After unlocking the door with the key, we entered a room with an archway. Tessa’s Identify spell informed us that this archway was a portal, connecting to other portals in pylons across the island. We could use the archway to look into any other pylon’s portal before leaping over to it. There even was a pylon near Tanaroa.
We decided to make camp in the room with the archway. In the morning, we gathered the contents of the naga’s camp – supplies and tents and more – and returned to the small village. The next day, we gathered the freed slaves and began to make the trip back over the island to Tanaroa. On the trip, Tessa began reading tomes from the arcane library. One of the first volumes she studied showed her the secret to entrapping naga souls within crystals and preventing their rebirth.
