The Lizard Folk Court
We departed the ruins of Zeno’s Tower early in the morning and started walking to the lizard folks’ lair. Our journey took us along the coast line, following an old coastal road that was overgrown and sinking into the swamp in places.
We only ran into trouble once – a half-days travel found us moving through a tricky spot where the road ran across a boggy lake when Rissa and Lindsey noticed that the water had eyes. The eyes turned into bullywug raiders that came leaping at us out of the water. Their numbers were bolstered a moment later when a bullywug shaman rose up and began throwing spells at us as well as a bullywug champion that entered the ambush, mounted on a giant toad. But the champion lost control of his mount when the toad got injured – and after Einor tripped and knocked the leader down, the rest of the bullywugs lost their courage and tried to escape. We hunted the surviving ambushers down and killed them.
The rest of the journey was uneventful. We traveled into a region of low-lying hills, out of the swamp, and onto drier ground. Another hour later, we ran into a lizard folk patrol, headed by a lizard folk in scale mail. He greeted us in the Common tongue. We explain why we had come. He nodded and answered that he knew of our coming and would escort us to the lizard folk lair.
The lizard folk lair was a large wooden lodge among several other buildings. The lizard folk captain turned us over to the queen’s minister, another lizard folk named Sarov. Sarov thanked us for our help on the smuggling ship. He then indicated that the queen would like to meet with us.
The lizard folk minster guided us into the throne room, a vast space supported by twin rows of wooden columns. The queen of the lizard folk arrived shortly thereafter, escorted by a entourage of lizard folk. While we were waiting, Einor cast Lessor Restoration on the old minister, curing his cataracts. Sarov thanked him.
The queen also thanked us and asked that the throne room be cleared. She explained that the lizard folk were divided – some of them wanted help with the sahugin, others wanted nothing to do with the outside world. We asked what we could do to convince the isolationists. The queen suggested that we take on the problem of Thousand Teeth, a monstrous crocodile that was terrifying her people. We agreed to help her. As we were doing so, Rissa and Lindsey noted that the two guards standing outside the throne room were gone. Einor walked over to the doors and threw them open – to be faced with an angry sea elf. The sea elf had time to throw a Confusion spell at us before he was grappled by Einor.
The two lizard folk guards lay near by, knocked out by a spell. Searching the sea elf, we find a holy symbol of Tharizdon – the Dark God, on him. The sea elf was a Chaos Cultist. Questioning him when he came around, revealed that he was really a Malenti – a sahugin that looked like a sea elf – and that he had been sent to keep the lizard folk from forming an alliance with other sea dwelling races such as the Locanth.
After a good night’s rest in the lodge, we set out the next morning to deal with Thousand Teeth. After killing the crocodile, we brought back the meat and skin to the lodge. The lizard folk were happy and rewarded us with five pearls worth ten gold pieces each. While we were out killing monsters, the queen had sent feelers out to the Locanth and other races, explaining their problems with the sea elf impostor. Leaving the lizard folk to the business of setting up their alliance, we returned to Saltmarsh.
