Collecting the Shardalyn
Now, it is time to research the ways that the Mythlar we recovered is used in fighting against Auril. Since Inga would be of no use in this work, she was left to her own devices. After six days, Melandrian and Rinaldo announced that they had unlocked the Mythlar’s secrets. Using a hard, black obsidian material known as Shardalyn, we could use the powers of the Mythlar to drain Auril’s divine essence, weakening her powers over the weather. And luckily, they knew where a lot of Shardalyn was to be found – in the shattered remains of a dragon that we fought in the duegar city of Sunblight.
Placing the Mythlar on the deck of the Spelljammer, Inga flew the ship out to the Icegate. An enormous glacier, the gash in the side of the glacier was the only access to Sunblight. At the Icegate, we were met by several duegar who rushed us to see their queen, the Grand Adopha Musgrave. All of the duegar are exhausted from the continuous attacks of Frost Giants – and the presence of secret Auril worshipers among the duegar sabotaging their efforts.
After a talk with the Grand Adopha, we let it be known that we would be resting in apartments in the duegar city before going out to fight the Frost Giants. Instead of resting, we prepared for the inevitable betrayal from the Auril worshiping duegar.
A few hours after we retired for the night, the door to our suite opened. Invisible duegar stood outside, about to throw spells at us. But Singe had his Lantern of Revealing which canceled the duegars’ invisibility. Melandrian threw a Fireball at them. Rinaldo and Beatrix engaged their fighters while Inga screamed a curse word, charged through their lines to cut down one mage and attacking the other magic user. After a short nasty fight, we killed them all. One we kept alive long enough to learn that two more treacherous duegar were with the small group traveling over the Great Glacier to get more supplies and four more blackguards were with the Frost Giants.
In the morning, we departed with the Spelljammer, retracing the route of the supply caravan. On the smooth, ice-blasted surface of the glacier, we easily found the two duegar. They had killed the others and were talking to an abominable yeti. From the height of the Spelljammer, it was easy to kill them at range. Then we collected what remained of the supply caravan’s goods and started to return to Sunblight.
On the trip back to the duegar city, we came across the five Frost Giants. They had blocked the road into Sunblight with ice boulders. While Inga kept flying the Spelljammer, the other rained death on the enemy. It was necessary to come with range of their boulder tossing but the speed of the Spelljammer and our height allowed us to avoid most of the damage. When the last of the Frost Giants had died, we landed to find a vast store of food that the giants had looted.
Moving that food onto the Spelljammer, we returned to the duegar city where we were greeted with joy – both at having broken the blockade and having supplied the city with food for several weeks. The duegar had gathered all the loose shards of Shardalyn and presented it to us.
In a remote area, we assembled the Mythlar and the Shardalyn. As the ritual to drain Auril’s divine essence was started, we were attacked by an Avatar of Auril and six large winter wolves. We killed the winter wolves with fire and having defeated the mighty owlbear with claws, watched the Avatar of Auril turn into mist. Now, it was time to see if the ritual worked – we set out for a journey to the island where Auril was supposed to be.
