Tercel Manor
It was a few weeks later; we had found Lucius and returned him to the temple. Cassander was making queries at the Indecipherable Scroll about finding a tutor to learn the Valossian language. He was given the name of Sergius Delmari – a young student. Sergius turned out to be a scrawny, underfed student. While talking about Valossian, Sergius mentioned that he was interested in inscriptions in Valossian at an old ruin in the hills surrounding Freeport. The ruins were an old Valossian tower, now known as the Stone Circle. Sergius only wants transcriptions of the Valossian inscriptions – Cassander and any one else is free to hunt for the rumored treasures.
When we meet for out weekly dinners, Cassander mentions the Valossian inscriptions as well as the bounty now being offered for the capture and return of live terror birds and devil lizards. The bounty is being offered by the organizers of the yearly Swag Fest, a celebration of Freeport and its pirates. This year, Swag Fest is being sponsored by Captain Lydon. No one is certain where the captain is getting the money – but rumors have it that Captain Lydon is making his purchases with bulk gold – the proceeds of a successful journey?
Zayd brings up the hunt for information about the Dock Slasher; someone has been cutting throats in the Dock District, leaving the bodies floating in the water. His victims are not limited to derelicts and drug addicts – he has also killing rakes. There is a 1000 sp bounty for information or his capture.
Zayd also shows us a notice from Madame Tercel, asking for agents that can be trusted to come to her house. Interested, we decide to look into this. Zayd added that these notices are all over the Merchant and Dock Wards.
The Tercel Manor is a large two-story brick building in the wealthy Merchant District. We were met at the door by a butler who showed us into a drawing room and asked us to wait. Shortly thereafter, Madame Tercel swept into the room. A handsome woman with a commanding air, Madame Tercel was in her forties. She asked us to sit down and requested if we could carry out her request, quietly.
After we agreed to her terms, Madame Tercel told us that a few objects had been removed from her – and the likely suspect was a young man named Merix. Merix was a young groom – and by that, she meant an armed guardsman – taken into the house. The scoundrel and rogue had repaid her by absconding with jewelry – as well as her daughter.
Madame Tercel wants several pieces back – a pearl choker, matching earrings and moonstone ring – as well as the safe return of her daughter, Lisette. For this, she is willing to pay us 500 sp as a reward.
We begin our inquires with one of the other grooms in the house. Arel was not close to Merix but he mentioned that Merix was a good swordsman although he fought with an unnecessary theatrical flourish. Merix was good looking and a fancy dresser. Going a bit deeper, Arel confessed that Merix was often seen attending to the mistress although things changed when Merix became interested in the daughter. It was at that time that Madame Tercel had Merix horse-whipped and thrown out of the house. Asking about Lisette, we learned that at age 25, Lisette inherits everything, leaving Madame Tercel with a small stipend.
Questioning Celestine, the other groom, we learned that she had horse-whipped the boy. She confirmed what Arel had told us. For more information, we would have to go talk to Lisette’s personal maid. Going upstairs to Lisette’s room, Talarial and Cassander searched the room while Zayd and I questioned the maid. The maid mentioned that Lisette had not taken any of her clothes when she left. All of Lisette’s jewelry was missing. When looking over the books in the room, we learned from the maid that Lisette was a great reader of books about adventurers. Tapping the floor of the armoire, Cassander finds a hidden compartment, now empty. Talarial finds marks on the window sill – marks left by Lisette when she left and entered her room. Apparently, Lisette had a secret adventuring life.
We were now ready to look for Merix – did he take the jewelry and Lisette? Did Lisette take off on her own? We needed to hear Merix’s side of the story. Given the theatrical style of Merix’s swordmanship, a good place to start would be in the Theater District.
