Alder’s Ledger
Having decided that we needed to return to Prisco Alder’s house to retrieve materials that we failed to find the last time, we started by staking out his office down at the docks. We wanted to be sure that Prisco Alder and Silas Snakeye were safely out of the way before we broke into his house again. Alessa was busking when she noticed the two men walk past her and enter the building. This was shortly before mid-day.
Collecting the laundry carts, we retraced our steps into the Merchant District and through the backyard gate and into the house. Apparently, Prisco Alder had not noticed our previous break-in or had taken no steps to improve the security around his house. Once inside his home office, we noticed no changes except for several documents on his desk. Perusing those documents, we learned that someone had transferred fifteen percent of the stock in the Tercel Shipping Company to Glenthalion. Our guess was that Madame Tercel had traded stock for the Potions of Longevity – the potions we had taken from Celeste the previous evening.
Taking the ledgers that covered the period of time of Helena Carter’s murder and the ship’s rutter from the Thrice Lucky, we left the house and retreated to a private room at the Scholar’s Quill. There, Cassander pored over the entries in the ledgers while we ate a delayed luncheon. Cassander turned up an anomaly – Prisco Alder had bought a large number of pearls, had them insured and later, reported them as stolen. This happened only once. The pearls were insured with the Dworken Liability Company, Ltd.
After luncheon, we headed over to the offices of the Investigation Squad. Latona Tryst was interested in what Zayd and Alessa had to report and encouraged us to follow up on the case of the missing pearls. Then we headed over to the Nightingale Threater to bring Madam Nightingale and Merix up to date. Madam Nightingale mentions that she’s heard a rumor that Prisco Alder suspects that Glenthalion’s people were responsible for breaking into his house. Since we were talking to Merix, we suggest that we would to talk to Lizette.
Later that evening, Lizette and her posse of female mercenaries show up at the evening show. With Merix’s help. We introduce ourselves and explain what is going on. After listening to us, Lizette declares that she is ready to return home. Celeste is no longer a threat and Lizette is tired of being ordered around by Madame Tercel. Madame Nightingale suggests that Lizette get another bodyguard and provides Alicia.
Lizette, accompanied by Alicia and her posse, headed up to Tercel Manor. On the way, we noticed that we were being shadowed by a man. One of the posse, a woman named Nivem, says that the man, Hugo Bland, was hired by her father to keep an eye on the group.
At the Tercel Manor there was scene as Lizette let her step-mother know that things have changed since she was last in the house. Lizette was no longer bound by Madame Tercel’s whims and if there were any problems – Lizette’s lawyers would get involved. As we were escorted out of the manor house by Auril – we asked him to keep an eye on Lizette as well.
The next morning, we decided to go to the Dworken Liability Company, Ltd., the insurers of the missing pearls. We found the company in a squat stone windowless building down near the docks. Talking to the dwarven receptionist, we were directed to wait after presenting him with the case number of the missing pearls. After a short wait, Gettan Dworken came out to see us. She was the investigator working on the missing pearls – about 10,000 silvers worth. The Dworken Liability Company has a long memory and the case was still open. We presented what we had found so far – and Gettan Dworken was interested. She added that more information might be found in talking to Helena Carter’s best friend. Lucretia Morne had left Freeport and was now working at a resort called Felix’s on the Windward Isle. From the information we now had, the informant that exposed Helena Carter was Prisco Alder, informing on himself.
Since we had gotten the rumor from Madam Nightingale, we decided it would be best to let Glenthalion know that Prisco Alder suspected his people. When we arrived at the Rose Garden Tea house, he was grateful for the warning – but that one of his roof runners, an elf named Tharmis, had gone missing. If Prisco Alder turned his creature loose on Glenthalion’s people – he’d be sorry. The elf offered us 100 silver for any information about Tharmis and 1,000 silver for his safe return.
