characters can begin with one language per point in intelligence above their starting language from their lineage and Humans can know two common languages from the beginning. Also any character can spend time to learn a language. Learning a language is a complex task involving intelligence rolls (TN 13) with one week time intervals and a number of successes that varies with the difficulty of the language and other languages known. Also, given enough time, nearly any piece of writing can be translated with the right dictionaries and grammar texts and a successful complexe Intelligence test. Human player characters usually begin with both Gwennet and Tocasian, non-humans must pick one or the other of those common languages to start with, of course they can learn the other in any of the normal ways. Common languages are: Gwennet – the human language of more northern climes. Tocasian- the human language of the Old Republic of Tocasia. Ulfaren – the language of the western elves. Dwir – the language of the northern dwarves. Gigantic – the language spoken throughout the Gigantic Confederacy to the south, in the isles spoken mainly by orcish refugees. Ancient Languages: Draconic – a language commonly used by magicians, Old Heysham – another magic language written in pictographs, related to Gwennet. Ophidian – the ancient language of the serpentfolk. Runic – the language of giant magic users and their kin.
