Sea Devils
As the sun set on Felix’s Resort, we prepared for the oncoming attack. The staff at Felix’s resort had already announced the end of activities on the seaward lawn, clearing the area for our ambush. Since Talariel had persuaded the sea crows to assist us, they gave us a aerial view of the sea devils’ attack.
To enrage the sea devils into making a rush, the Blackwoods had placed the ugly idol on a wall, surrounded by everburning candles. In the growing gloom, we watched from our hiding places as the sea devils climbed onto the wooden pier and marched up the grassy slope.
From behind the wall, the Blackwoods stood up, weapons drawn. The sea devils gave a shout and rushed at them. As they passed, we stepped in and hit them from the rear, focusing our attacks on the leader and his elites. The fighting was intense but by the time it was over, we had won – even though we were barely able to stand.
The Blackwoods thanked us, allowed us to loot the battlefield and took their idol. Alessa wanted the 25 pound gold idol to be melted down – but they wanted the ugly thing to be offered for sale to some collector. Alessa warned them that we would see it again, probably surrounded by a mob of crazed cultists in fish masks or something.
Felix, when he heard about the fight, was overjoyed at our victory. He allowed us to stay at the resort for nothing and threw a party and feast for us the next evening. In a few days of rest, we would be able to return to Freeport. Lucretia Morne would accompany us, prepared to swear out an affidavit about Helena Carter.
After delivering Lucretia to the Investigative Squad, we went in search of Captain Greylock. His ship, the Siren Song had just arrived in port. Our first stop was the Dworken Liability Company where we brought Gettren Dworken up to date. Next, we approach the Siren Song and asked to speak with the captain.
Edgar Greylock was willing to speak with us. He remembered Helena Carter and her pearls – he even showed us a bill of sale for 100 pearls for 5,000 silver pieces. Captain Greylock remembered that Helena swore that the pearls had come from Helena’s mother and that Helena was anxious to leave Freeport. Captain Greylock advised her to hire a guard from a local tavern – the Black Gull. We knew that Helena Carter never made it to the Black Gull.
Before continuing, Captain Greylock wanted to meet Latona Tryst of the Investigative Squad. He want assurances that he would not be liable for smuggling. Alessa and Zayd agreed. We went up to the Investigative Squad house and told Latona Tryst.
In Latona Tryst’s office, Captain Greylock continued his tale. He had contact with Silas Snakeye and Prisco Alder. Prisco Alder had approached the captain shortly after Helena’s death and purchased a very expensive emerald. It was of an unusual size and clarity. Thinking back, we might have seen that emerald – in Prisco Alder's house, there was picture of his deceased wife, wearing a large emerald in a golden setting as a pendant. This emerald would be of interest to Gettren Dworken. It would probably show up next at Prisco Alder’s daughter’s debut party, a few days before Swag Fest. It might be a good idea to be present at that affair and we knew someone that could get us an invitation.
