What you may want to know about Sandpoint
Sandpoint is a small town of about 1200 inhabitants; many more live in the surrounding woods and farmlands. It was founded about a hundred years ago by four powerful families from Magnimar. At the mouth of the Turandarok River, they found a place where the river flowed slowly into the Varisian Gulf, rather than cascading over a cliff like most other streams. The Turandarok River provided easy access to the forests and farmlands further inland.
The four families still hold most of the power today. They are – the Kaijitsus (glassmakers), the Valdemars (shipbuilders), the Scarnettis (loggers) and Deverins (brewers and farmers). Their family mansions decorate the bluff south of the town, across the Turandarok River.
Sandpoint is built around a bend in the river, on a slowly rising hill that ends in cliffs on the Varisian Gulf side. At the highest point stands the Old Light. The Old Light is the remains of a huge tower of which only the last 50 feet remain. It stands at the edge of a 120 foot cliff. Some scholars estimate that the tower once stood 700 feet tall. The remains of the Old Light have been plundered for years to build Sandpoint’s houses. At the base of the hill lies most of Sandport’s port.
Further north is a tidal island known as Chopper’s Isle. Accessible on foot at low tide, the island is surrounded by tall cliffs. Only a few have climbed up to its top in recent years. This island was once home to Sandpoint’s most notorious criminal.
Sandpoint can be reached by crossing bridges over the Turandarok River or by passing through Northgate from the north. The wall was constructed to protect Sandpoint from beasts, bandits and goblins living in the woods.
Other than the horrifying murders of Chopper, the other incident was the burning of the Sandpoint chapel and the death of the head priest, Ezakien Tobyn, and his adopted daughter several years ago. A new stone cathedral has risen to replace the old chapel.
